Visual Perception

Visual perceptual challenges are sometimes called CVI (cerebral visual impairment). This means that your eyes are working but the brain has trouble making sense of what the eyes see. This can make it hard to find objects or understand what is happening around you. It can impact reading, writing, spatial awareness and everyday tasks.

Key Challenges

  • Visual Clutter: Difficulty processing busy scenes or cluttered visual environments.
  • Recognition: Trouble identifying faces, objects, or places.
  • Visual Fatigue: Vision may vary depending on fatigue or stress and may get worse if you spend too long focusing on one thing.
  • Social Impact: Potential misunderstandings when you have experienced visual misinterpretation e.g. not picking up on facial expressions.

Visual Issues that you may have noticed:

  • Detection: Trouble telling apart the difference between similar shapes or letters.
  • Memory: Difficulty remembering what was seen.
  • Spatial Relations: Problems understanding where objects are in relation to yourself or other things.
  • Visual Motor Integration: Difficulty coordinating between eyes and hands.
  • Filling in the gaps: Trouble recognising objects when elements are hidden or the object is an unusual position e.g. upside down or the wrong way round
